Engineer and Scientist Graduate Training Plan

The aim of DML's Graduate Training Scheme is to develop highly competent chartered engineers who have a broad and comprehensive understanding of our business, such that they can effectively manage complex engineering projects.

There are five key competencies that we seek to develop:

We achieve this through:

Company Induction (2 weeks)

This is a gradual process of familiarisation of the DML Group's history, organisation, facilities, present workload and planned development. You'll gain an understanding of the Graduate Engineer Training Scheme and relevant employment conditions and have the opportunity to discuss relationships with relevant institutions and your individual training plan. Through briefings, seminars and site visits, you'll meet managers, mentors and start to settle in.

Practical Engineering Skills (8 weeks)

Through project based assignments, on attachment to a local engineering training organisation, you'll acquire a broad knowledge of engineering techniques used in the marine engineering industry. You'll also gain hands-on experience in areas such as welding, pipework fabrication and instrumentation pneumatics and learn how to apply your skills to the design and manufacture of an engineering project as well as project management and presentation skills.

Production Management (17 weeks) + 1week Health and Safety

Assigned to one of DML's submarine or surface ship production teams, you'll gain repairing and refitting experience and learn about the repair and overhaul of equipment and systems. You'll gain an understanding of setting-to-work and inspection and test and trial procedures. You'll also become competent in scheduling work time, materials and dock preparation.

Health and Safety Department (1 week)

Working alongside professional safety practitioners, you'll establish a basic understanding of the requirements of health & safety, fire and environmental legislation and how it impacts on the business as well as becoming familiar with legal procedures and practices.

Facility Engineering Group (12 weeks)

Spending six weeks in DML's safety section and six weeks in the design section, you'll become aware of the requirements of the Nuclear Installations Act, Ionising Radiations Regulations and other associated legal drivers. You'll learn about safety case production processes and strategy as well as the safety assisted design process and the many engineering challenges of nuclear facilities, systems and plant.

Facility Management (6 weeks)

Working alongside a facility plant manager, you'll gain experience of the procedures and processes required to manage a nuclear facility within the confines of a safety case. You'll understand refuel/defuel procedures and gain an understanding of Nuclear Standards Branch monitoring and health physics processes.

Project Management (17 weeks) + 1 Week Quality

You'll be appointed as a participating member of a project team, to one of the submarine or surface ship project sections, where you'll gain an awareness of cost control techniques, material planning and procurement control. You'll gain a sound understanding of relevant computer systems, software packages and organisation methods.

Quality (1 week)

By developing an awareness of DML's Business Management System and the part it plays in delivering the company's quality policy and corporate objectives, you'll gain an understanding of the audit process and how to test for compliance. You'll spend a week in the Quality, Policy & Compliance department with additional appointments in the Submarine Business Unit Quality Cell and the Commercial Quality Cell.

Estates Department

You'll participate in group visits to the various Estates Departments to discover more about the services it provides to the site.

Management Skills (Throughout the Training Scheme)

At all times you'll be supported in developing your management skills and techniques. You'll learn the art of effective communication, teambuilding, leadership, writing and presentation as well as becoming skilled in meetings and chairmanship, negotiating, discipline, staff appraisal, decision-making, delegation and project management.

Nuclear Safety Training (Through the initial phase of the Scheme)

You'll attend internal and external training courses to gain awareness of the site specific NSRP methods and techniques that are necessary to draft, understand and manage simple safety cases. You'll understand the issues, interfaces and legal requirements that affect operation on a Licensed Site.
